Miniatures of Juan Manuel Fangio and a flying Tommi Makinen

Malaysia 2009

AFTER ALL THE ON-TRACK DRAMA AT THE AUSTRALIAN GP, AND THE OFF-TRACK DRAMA DURING THE WEEK FOLLOWING (SEE THE AMENDED ARCHIVE REPORT), MALAYSIA MANAGED TO PROVIDE ITS OWN BRAND OF DRAMA. BERNIE ECCLESTONE HAD ARRANGED ANOTHER DELAYED START FOR THE BENEFIT OF EUROPEAN T.V. AND THIS WAS TIMED SO THAT IT WAS BOUND TO BE INTERRUPTED BY THE RAIN THAT DESCENDS ON SEPANG LATE IN THE AFTERNOON ON A DAILY BASIS. ONLY ONE PREVIOUS RACE HAS BEEN A 'WET' RACE SO THE USUAL START TIME SHOULD BE THE CORRECT CHOICE.
JENSON BUTTON SECURED HIS 2ND SUCCESSIVE POLE FOR BRAWN GP WITH RUBENS BARRICHELLO 8TH AFTER A 5-PLACE PENALTY BECAUSE OF A CHANGED GEARBOX. SEBASTIAN VETTEL SUFFERED A 10-PLACE DROP AS HE WAS ADJUDGED TO BE AT FAULT FOR AN INCIDENT IN AUSTRALIA. BOTH TOYOTAS AND THE WILLIAMS OF NICO ROSBERG WERE ALSO FLYING AND STARTED 2ND, 3RD AND 4TH RESPECTIVELY.

JENSON DID NOT GET A GOOD START AND WAS 4TH AT THE FIRST TURN BUT RECOVERED WELL INTO 3RD AND STARTED TO HUNT DOWN NICO, LEADING, AND JARNO, 2ND. HE HAD 2 MORE LAPS OF FUEL IN HIS CAR AND DIDN'T HE MAKE GOOD USE OF IT. IN A SCHUMACHER-ESQUE SEQUENCE, THOSE TWO LAPS WERE SO GOOD THAT WHEN HE EMERGED FROM HIS PIT STOP, HE WAS IN THE LEAD AND NEVER LOST IT UNTIL THE END OF THE RACE.

I SAY HE NEVER LOST IT BUT IT WAS DIFFICULT TO ACTUALLY TELL BECAUSE IT WAS NOT LONG AFTER GAINING THE LEAD THAT THE BLACK CLOUDS RELEASED THEIR CONTENTS ONTO THE TRACK. INITIALLY, QUITE LIGHTLY AND THIS PERSUADED SOME TO PIT FOR INTERMEDIATE TYRES. BOTH FERRARIS PITTED FOR EXTREME WET-WEATHER TYRES BUT THEIR ANTICIPATION WAS TOO EARLY AND THEY SOON HAD TO PUT A SECOND SET ON - AT A TIME WHEN EVERYONE HAD TO DO SO BECAUSE THE RAINFALL BECAME A DELUGE. THERE WERE SO MANY PIT-STOPS THAT IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL WHICH POSITION ANYONE WAS IN!

JENSON REGAINED THE TRACK IN THE LEAD AFTER ALL THIS AND THEN THE RAIN CAME DOWN SO HEAVILY THAT THE RACE HAD TO BE RED-FLAGGED AFTER 33 LAPS - OFFICIALLY A SUSPENSION, BUT IT SEEMED UNLIKELY THAT IT WOULD EVER RESUME AND IT DIDN'T. ONLY HALF POINTS WERE AWARDED BECAUSE THEY HAD NOT COVERED RACE DISTANCE.

SO JENSON WON AGAIN, WITH RUBENS 5TH, MAKING ANOTHER HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL RACE FOR BRAWN GP. HOPEFULLY, THESE TWO RESULTS WILL NOT BE CHANGED ON APRIL 14 WHEN THE APPEAL AGAINST THE DIFFUSER DESIGNS OF BRAWN, TOYOTA AND WILLIAMS IS HEARD. IMPARTIAL OUTSIDERS FEEL THAT THE FIA WILL RULE THEIR DIFFUSERS TO BE LEGAL - AFTER ALL, THE FIA STEWARDS AT BOTH RACES HAVE ALREADY ACCEPTED THEM AS LEGAL INTERPRETATIONS OF THE RULES.

NICK HEIDFELD CLAIMED 2ND AS A RESULT OF GOOD RAIN-STRATEGY, THE TWO TOYOTAS 3RD AND 4TH BECAUSE THEY ARE FAST BUT FERRARI ARE STILL POINTLESS AND MCLAREN ONLY HAVE 1 POINT, FROM LEWIS HAMILTON'S 7TH PLACE. WE EAGERLY AWAIT APRIL 14TH AND ALSO THE NEXT RACE IN CHINA, APRIL 19TH.
