Miniatures of Juan Manuel Fangio and a flying Tommi Makinen

Czech Republic 2009

THE PRE-RACE NEWS WAS POSSIBLY THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT OF THE WEEKEND IN TERMS OF THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. CASEY STONER AND DUCATI HAVE DECIDED THAT HE MUST HAVE A LONG BREAK TO ENABLE HIS PHYSICAL CONDITION TO BE PROPERLY ANALYSED AND FOR HIM TO HAVE A DECENT RECOVERY PERIOD.

SO HE DID NOT PARTICIPATE HERE IN BRNO OR AT THE NEXT TWO MEETINGS BUT HOPES TO BE BACK AT ESTORIL ON 4TH OCTOBER. SO ANY CHANCE OF A TILT AT THE TITLE FOR THIS YEAR HAS GONE AND HE MUST BE DESPERATELY DISAPPOINTED THAT SOMETHING OUTSIDE HIS CONTROL HAS ENDED HIS DREAM FOR THIS YEAR.

JORGE LORENZO IS ANOTHER WHO NOW APPEARS TO HAVE LITTLE HOPE OF THE 2009 CHAMPIONSHIP BUT, IN HIS CASE, IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS THINGS APPARENTLY WITHIN HIS CONTROL THAT HAVE LEAD TO HIM FALLING 50 POINTS BEHIND VALENTINO ROSSI WITH ONLY 6 ROUNDS LEFT.

VALENTINO MAY HAVE ONE NON-FINISH IN THOSE RACES BUT IT IS MOST UNLIKELY THAT HE WOULD HAVE TWO. BUT ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE SO JORGE WILL NOT HAVE GIVEN UP HOPE COMPLETELY.

IF HE COULD RIDE IN THE RACES LIKE HE RODE IN FREE PRACTICE AND QUALIFYING HERE AT BRNO THEN HE WOULD NOT BE 50 POINTS BEHIND. HE PUT IN LAP AFTER LAP OF EXTREMELY FAST TIMES, MANY BELOW CASEY'S LAP RECORD, AND IT SEEMED LIKELY THAT HE COULD WIN THE RACE, EVEN THOUGH ROSSI JUST BEAT HIM IN QUALIFYING.

HE SEEMS TO LACK CONCENTRATION AT CRUCIAL TIMES. AT DONNINGTON IN THE WET, HE DRIFTED ONTO THE WHITE LINE AND CRASHED WHILST HERE HE RODE BRILLIANTLY TO OVERCOME, FIRSTLY, A POOR START AND, SECONDLY, VALENTINO WHO HAD SOON TAKEN THE LEAD FROM DANI PEDROSA.

SO AFTER TAKING ABOUT 13/14 LAPS TO GET INTO THE LEAD, DURING WHICH THEY SWOPPED LAP RECORDS MANY TIMES, WHAT DOES HE DO? HE DRIFTS TOO WIDE ON A LEFT-HANDER, GETS ONTO THE DIRTY PART OF THE TRACK AND, IN ATTEMPTING TO CUT ACROSS BEFORE ROSSI CAN TAKE THE LEAD, HE LOSES THE FRONT AND CRASHES OUT AGAIN.

THAT ALLOWED ROSSI TO COAST HOME WITH DANI PEDROSA 2ND AND TONY ELIAS 3RD WITH ONE OF HIS ALL TOO RARE MASTERLY RIDES. NICKY HAYDEN FINISHED 6TH AND MIKA KALLIO, DEPUTISING FOR STONER, WOULD HAVE FINISHED IN THE TOP 10 BUT FOR AN ODD CRASH WITH MARCO MELANDRI WHO HAD JUST GOT IN FRONT OF HIM AT THE LAST CORNER ON THE PENULTIMATE LAP.
