Miniatures of Juan Manuel Fangio and a flying Tommi Makinen

Italy 2009

RAFAEL NADAL'S SHOCK EXIT FROM THE FRENCH OPEN AT ROLAND GARROS AFTER A 31-MATCH, 4 CONSECUTIVE TITLES UNBEATEN RUN WAS MATCHED AT MUGELLO WHEN VALENTINO ROSSI'S DOMINATION (7 CONSECUTIVE VICTORIES) WAS ENDED BY CASEY STONER, WHOSE WIN WAS THE FIRST EVER FOR DUCATI AT THIS THEIR HOME TRACK.

'THIS WAS DECLARED TO BE A WET RACE AT THE START BUT THE TRACK WAS NOT VERY WET AND LOOKED AS IF IT WOULD DRY OUT FAIRLY QUICKLY IF THE LIGHT RAIN EASED OFF. EVERYONE APPEARED TO START ON WET TYRES WITH THEIR SECOND BIKES SET UP WITH DRY TYRES JUST IN CASE.'

THOSE WORDS ARE TAKEN FROM THE REPORT OF THE PREVIOUS RACE AT LE MANS - IDENTICAL CONDITIONS FACED THE RIDERS ON RACE DAY AFTER TWO DAYS OF GLORIOUS WEATHER FOR PRACTICE AND QUALIFYING.

CHRIS VERMEULEN MADE THE MOST OF HIS RENOWNED WET-WEATHER ABILITY GOING FROM 11TH ON THE GRID TO THE LEAD OF THE RACE BEFORE A LAP HAD BEEN COMPLETED BUT HE EVENTUALLY DROPPED BACK AS THE TRACK DRIED AND HE FINISHED OUT OF THE POINTS.

JORGE LORENZO'S RACE TOOK THE OPPOSITE ROUTE. HAVING CRASHED ON HIS SIGHTING LAP AND TRASHED HIS NO. 1 BIKE, HE DID WELL TO RECOVER FROM A BAD START FROM POLE POSITION TO GET UP TO 6TH BY THE END OF THE FIRST LAP AND EVENTUALLY FINISHED 2ND.

THERE WERE MANY LEADERS DURING THE RACE, EITHER BECAUSE OF THE CHANGING CONDITIONS OR BECAUSE OF RIDERS CHANGING BIKES. ONE NOTABLE LEADER FOR A TIME WAS LORIS CAPIROSSI ON THE OTHER SUZUKI - HE RAISED A CHEER FROM THE CROWD. A NOTABLE ABSENTEE FROM THE LEAD WAS VALENTINO ROSSI BUT HE GRADUALLY RECOVERED TO FINISH 3RD.

CASEY STONER WAS ALWAYS NEAR OR AT THE FRONT. THE ONLY PERIOD WHEN HE WASN'T CAME MID-RACE WHEN HIS CLUTCH GAVE PROBLEMS BUT HE EVENTUALLY SORTED THIS OUT AND STORMED BACK INTO THE LEAD ON LAP 14 TO RUN OUT A VERY HAPPY WINNER. THE DUCATISTI DULY CELEBRATED WHILST THE LEGIONS OF ROSSI FANS WERE DOWNCAST AFTER 7 YEARS OF SIMILAR CELEBRATIONS.

AS NADAL WOULD AGREE - ALL GOOD THINGS HAVE TO COME TO AN END AND THIS WAS DUCATI'S DAY.
