Miniatures of Juan Manuel Fangio and a flying Tommi Makinen

Netherlands 2009

A BIT OF AN ANTI-CLIMAX AFTER THE PREVIOUS RACE FIREWORKS. IT STARTED INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH WITH VALENTINO ROSSI, CASEY STONER AND DANI PEDROSA IN CLOSE ATTENDANCE. JORGE LORENZO HAD A POOR START BUT GRADUALLY CLAWED HIS WAY UP TO JOIN THE TOP THREE.

DANI THEN SLID OFF THE TRACK AND RETIRED AND HIS TEAM-MATE, ANDREA DOVIZIOSO, FOLLOWED SHORTLY AFTERWARDS IN EXACTLY THE SAME MANNER AND AT EXACTLY THE SAME POINT ON THE TRACK.

THIS LEFT THE FRONT THREE IN A COMFORTABLE POSITION (ROSSI, LORENZO AND STONER IN THAT ORDER) AND THEY GRADUALLY PULLED AWAY FROM THE FIELD AND FROM EACH OTHER. ROSSI THEN HAD HIS USUAL VICTORY CELEBRATIONS FOR HIS 100TH VICTORY.

THE MAIN INTEREST CENTRED FOR MOST OF THE RACE ON A MID-FIELD BATTLE FEATURING NICKY HAYDEN, JAMES TOSELAND, RANDY DE PUNIET, TONY ELIAS AND LORIS CAPIROSSI WITH COLIN EDWARDS AND CHRIS VERMEULEN IN LONELY PLACES BETWEEN THE LEADERS AND THE BATTLING MID-FIELD.

CASEY STONER WAS EVEN MORE ILL THAN LAST TIME OUT AND ONLY MANAGED THE PODIUM CELEBRATIONS THIS WEEK AND HAD TO PULL OUT OF THE POST-RACE INTERVIEWS TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION AGAIN FOR HIS MYSTERY ILLNESS. NOBODY HAS MENTIONED THE CURRENT INFLUENZA PANDEMIC BUT AUSTRALIA HAS BEEN PARTICULARLY BADLY HIT AND YOU CANNOT HELP BUT WONDER.

WE CAN ONLY WISH HIM WELL AND THAT, WHATEVER IT TURNS OUT TO BE, HE IS FIT FOR THE LAGUNA SECA RACE THIS COMING WEEKEND.
